HeART highlighted in the Ridgewood News’ ‘Creative ways to continue arts in a pandemic’

HeART in Motion is staying safe and sanitized while offering dance, music, yoga and fitness classes with responsible social distancing at its spacious studio in the heart of Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Artistic Director Nikki Manx was recently quoted in the Jan. 1, 2021 edition of the Ridgewood News in its article “Creative ways to continue arts in a pandemic.”

Screen+Shot+2021-01-27+at+3.13.55+PM.jpg

“The community has come together more than ever,” Manx told the newspaper. “The biggest change is now we have 15 minutes in between each class to sanitize.”

In-person classes are limited to 10 students, while additional students can join hybrid classes by participating at home using Zoom.

“I think hybrid is the way of the future so that everyone can participate however they feel comfortable, because things aren’t going to be the same,” Manx told Ridgewood News.

Community members have appreciated HeART’s efforts to provide high-quality and joyful dance experiences for all ages, levels, aspirations, and abilities in Bergen County, New Jersey.

“When quarantine began, my heart looked for familiarity in a world of chaos and I found myself longing for ballet,” an adult student recently told HeART. “Thank you for reminding me of what feels like a second home, and providing inspiration daily.”

For kids, the routine of ongoing classes has allowed them to continue normal activities during the pandemic while also continuing their arts training.

“I’m incredibly grateful to HeART in Motion for making my daughter so happy. I adore the philosophy of its youth program and appreciate all of its efforts to keep the studio open and a place of hope for the kids,”  one  parent recently told HeART.

HeART offers a compassionate and nurturing learning environment while also maintaining an emphasis on proper technique and artistry from the heart.

“We believe in setting high but manageable expectations to allow students to grow and be pushed in a way that also sets them up for success,” said Manx.

Recap of Our 2020 Holiday Events

Check out what we did with our community this special Holiday Season!

Downtown for the Holidays in Collaboration with Art of Motion Dance Theatre

This season, we spread holiday cheer throughout downtown Ridgewood by posing as various Nutcracker and Christmas characters in different stores along Ridgewood Ave. The performers this year comprised of our youth and adult students as well as guest artists from AOMDT.

Nutcracker Weekend Workshop

Since we were unable to have a full fledged performance this year, we decided to hold a workshop for a small number of students to teach them different repertoire from the production as well as a special Rockette class! Different teachers and special guest artists helped bring the workshop to life. Parents were also invited to watch the end of the workshop over zoom to see their child or children perform the pieces!

Dance/Vocal Livestream

Lastly, we have an upcoming dance and vocal livestream with a few of our students put together by faculty member Alex Vetterlein on December 22nd. Stay tuned for more info on how to join the livestream.

A Virtual Visit: N.J. Dancers To Learn From Japanese Masters on International Dance Day

Japanese Dance Masters Have Strong Ties To Bergen County, New Jersey

Dance studios—like most arts-based businesses and communities in New Jersey—are on hiatus as society responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Ridgewood-based studio HeART in Motion is keeping its community intact through online instruction utilizing video conferencing software.

This Wednesday, April 29, on International Dance Day, HeART will connect its students and faculty with choreographers Tammy O’hara and Rika Higashino of Japan, reuniting the Japanese artists with the Bergen County studio online for a trans-continental master class that’s also available to other interested dancers around the country and around the world.

Tammy O’hara studied for many years with her mentor, Luigi, and teaches jazz at Luigi’s Jazz Center in New York City, in addition to her own Studio Tammy in Hadano, Japan. (Eugene Louis Faccuito, formerly of Woodcliff Lake, was internationally renowned for jazz dance technique and taught at the Manhattan-based center before his death at 90 in 2015.)

The Japanese choreographers share a love of jazz dance with HeART faculty member Ravah Daley, who is also a lifelong student of the great innovator, Luigi.

Along with HeART faculty and other community members, Daley, O’hara and Higashino all contribute choreography to the annual Ridgewood High School Jamboree, an annual fundraising music revue, in addition to teaching master classes at HeART during their visits.

Now blocked by COVID-19, all participants are uniting online while they are apart for this International Dance Day with an Adult Jazz Master Class at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29.

The class will be hosted on ZOOM, a video conferencing application that will live stream in participants’ homes. (Interested participants should go here to register for class, or visit www.HeartinMotionStudio.com for a full schedule of online classes or more information. HeART’s first-class-free policy means that new students can participate in this class as a complimentary gift.)
